Jackie Chan Typographic Portrait

This work is my favorite piece, inspired by philanthropist, filmmaker, and martial artist Jackie Chan. This portrait comprises Chan’s film titles, characteristics, and disciplines. The image referenced is the poster from Chan’s Supercop movie. The typeface is Charcuterie Block, chosen for the edgy serifs, capitalization, and angular bars that emulate Chan’s daring and charismatic personality. This piece took over twenty hours of dedicated work. I used lines, spacing, and contrast to create dimensionality, form, and rhythm.
I used Chan's Supercop poster as a reference with his full body hi-kick action pose. This project took one week to finish and I really took my time on all the words. I used Charcuterie Block typeface for the edgy serifs and angular stems that emulate Chan’s high octane energy.

The most difficult task was figuring out the dimensions and the meshes to work with to make this typographic portrait stand out. I had to start with a black and white photo to understand how the values were blocked out.
I simplified the black and white values to make it easier to input my design.
Now I had an image to trace and work with, but I wanted this portrait to have dimensions. I started by tracing where the typeface baselines would be.
Now it was time to add the words. I used lines, spacing, and contrast to create dimensionality, form, and rhythm.
Layer by later, word by word, he started to come together.
Every step of the way I learned something new about adobe and line work. This piece was honestly one I will never forget and will hold near and dear to me. I had the best time working on it and learned a lot from it.
